WAX Thermostats
They are based on the properties of special waxes that have a high coefficient of expansion. This type of thermostat has a rubber diaphragm surrounded by wax and an elongated rod. The wax is enclosed in a metal capsule in contact with the water. When the wax is cold, the valve is closed and prevents water from flowing to the radiator. As the wax heats up, it expands, pushing the rod outward, and through the action-reaction principle, the valve opens. The valve closes automatically via a spring as the wax cools.
This kind of Thermostat is the most widely used type of thermostats at present and is mounted originally in all internal combustion engines.
